""What better way to celebrate the holidays than to give the gift of new food recipes? To do just that, we trained our very own AI to generate scrumptious new recipes that no human has ever dreamed of.""

If there’s one thing that everyone looks forward to for the holidays, it’s probably presents. But if there were two things, the second thing would probably be eating food. So, what better way to celebrate than to give the gift of new food recipes? To do just that, we trained our very own AI to generate scrumptious new recipes that no human has ever dreamed of. By feeding the algorithm dozens of recipe texts, it learns to generate similar recipes (with some randomness thrown into the mix).

Title: Velveeta Cherry Creme Fudge

  • 1/2 oz Chopped nuts

  • 6 oz Semisweet chocolate, (freezer, 1 1/2 cups)

  • 1 c Butter resened milk

  • 2 c Sugar

  • 1/4 c Mixed salt

Crush popped corn in pie pan, stir applesauce, soften bloway of the tomen into small saucepan, stirring constantly until combined.

Using 1 cup water. Pour into well-buttered pan.

In a saucepan, orange, cook syrup begins to a quarter each potato to add and place in pan over medium heat. Cut in squares.

These recipes usually don’t make sense – there’s nothing forcing the algorithm to use consistent ingredients, realistic quantities, or even real words. But the text has the flavor of a real recipe. What’s interesting is that the algorithm can learn mostly proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structures just by training on a bunch of unlabeled text input. This means that nobody had to write rules about punctuation, parts of speech, how to spell, or anything like that. We give it a bunch of text documents, and it learns to generate text, one letter at a time.

Title: Cheese Potato Fudge

  • (1) Carmens Chocolate chips with powdered sugar and cubes

  • 1 chips

  • 1 1/3 cup Butter

  • 1 cup Plates

30 qt chocolate chips; stir in margarine and salt until cookie sheets. In glass, bend. Cut cupcake. Place in heavy bowl, bring Semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 c. Sifted.

Combine all ingredients and salt, sirup to small saucepan. Cook 4 inch squares Semisweet chocolate chips. Stir until mixture boils * Unstuce and cook to 1305 F sugar, honey and chocolate. Pour into pan. Soil while on cookie sheet until smooth. Melt chocolate and butter.

What’s the recipe?

We used a text generation model called Char-RNN and scoured the internet for dessert recipes in ASCII text format to feed it. Quite a few of these exist, but getting them formatted consistently and removing extra junk can take a bit of work. Like a fine chef choosing his ingredients, we looked for the best recipes to train our AI cook. The examples used for training will determine what kind of output it generates. To generate holiday dessert recipes, we fed it a lot of candy, cakes, and the occasional odd dinner recipe to make things interesting. We ended up splitting the generation into two parts – first we trained a model to generate recipe titles, then we used the title as a seed for generating the ingredients and instructions.

Title: Chocolate Spin Balls Servings: 6

  • 2 c Granulaunges

  • 1/2 c Water

  • 1/4 c Butter

  • 1 1/2 lb Bars (6 ounces)

Combine sugar, water, creme simmering in 1 1/2 times. Remove from heat; stir in 2 cups sugar and butter on wax paper.

What good is it?

Now a bunch of random recipes doesn’t seem terribly useful, but similar models can be quite powerful. Here are some ways people are making use of AI models like this:

  • Automatic text summarization – AI can pick out the important bits to generate shortened versions of your documents

  • Review sentiment analysis – AI can decide if a review or comment is positive or negative

  • Next word prediction in your text messaging apps

  • Automatic text translation

Happy Holidays!

We hope you enjoy reading these fabulous recipes, but please…for your own safety, don’t try eating any of them.
